Shirley Pennington “Lee” Hale

July 23, 1928 – April 1, 2017

Shirley Pennington Hale, 88 of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Elizabeth Hale; wife, Catherine Hale; son, John Hale; grandson, A.J. Kirkland; brother, Richard Hale.

Mr. Hale is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Skiles (Brad) of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Kayla Hale of Huntsville, AL, Ashley Sorrells (Jace) of Huntsville, AL; sister, Elizabeth King of California; sister-in-laws, Dot Webster of Chattanooga, TN and Mary Anne Hale of West Virginia; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Known to friends as “Lee” Hale and most affectionately known as “PawPaw”, Mr. Hale was an incredible man with too many accomplishments to list.

He was raised up during the Depression and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Arriving in Huntsville during the 1950’s, Lee worked closely with Dr. Wernher Von Braun and the German Scientists. He later went on to Cape Canaveral, Florida as a part of NASA’s Apollo Rocket Team, sending the first man to the moon. He was a true rocket scientist.

Lee had many different affiliations. He was involved in Little Theater, Fantasy Playhouse, Community Ballet Association, Order of DeMolay for Boys. He was a member of Cahaba Shrine, Helion Lodge F & AM, Order of the Eastern Star Helion Chapter 203 and Huntsville Chapter 537, and a member of the Holmes St. United Methodist Church.

Lee enjoyed cooking, needlepoint, travel and gardening. As an Octogenarian, he explored some new hobbies such as FaceBook and playing solitaire on his iPad! He was often spotted out and about on the town and loved to play catch with Samson the dog. He will be missed by all.

You may visit with the family at Valhalla Funeral Home on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 2:00pm in Valhalla’s chapel. Interment will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Please sign the guest registry at
